A 3 year old girl probably feels like the weight of the world is offer her shoulders. Or her chin. This after doctors from LSU Health in Shreveport, LA successfully removed a tumor the size of a basketball from her face. This little girl was in surgery for 9 grueling hours.
After surgery she was unrecognizable to her parents. The tumor weighed 5 pounds. About as much as a 5 pound sack of potatoes. Can you imagine having a tumor that size on your jaw? How painful. The best news is that the tumor is completely benign.
The girl in question is Melyssa Braga from Brazil. The reason for the removal of the tumor was the impact it has having on her overall health. And this impact was getting worse by the day.
The tumor had eaten away her jaw from one side to the other. Also, it was affecting Melyssa’s eating and breathing and doctors feared it would lead to malnutrition if they did not act quickly.
To make matters worse the weight of the tumor was causing her not to be able to keep her head still. It was like having an additional head attached to your jaw.
Melyssa’s case was first spotted by Dr. Cesla palmieri an oral surgeon on this case read about this little girl in a Brazilian newspaper and was able to connect with the parents to make this surgery happen for this little girl.
